Rampanalgas Village Corps
Princess Elizabeth Centre for Handicapped Children Youth Cultural Exchange Programme Skills Development Programme St. Dominic's HomeThe Rotary Club of Maraval has adopted Rampanalgas, a village in the country district of Toco, Trinidad. The aim of this project is to assist the residents in developing a stronger economic environment. Club members work with a core group made up of about forty villagers with elected officers. We have provided skills training, for unemployed men and women, in food preservation, pickling, tie dye and other crafts. Markets have been accessed, through Rotary, for the food preservation business. We have also assisted in upgrading plumbing and infrastructural services in the village school.
Please support our project br purchasing Rampanalgas products at Hi-Lo and other grocery stores.
The Centre provides medical care for handicapped children and a home for those whose parents are too poor to provide adequate maintenance for the children. The Centre's funds are very limited and it is desperately in need of assistance. In response to this need, we applied for and received funding from various groups - The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany supplied funds for rehabilitation aids; The Royal Netherlands Embassy provided funding for the establishment of vocational training workshops ( woodwork, sewing, cooking, tie dye, upholstery and small appliance repairs); and AMOCO gave funds for the purchase of the rods and hooks used in scoliosis operations - there is still an urgent need for more assistance in this area.
For the past two years, our Club has sponsored high school students at the Rotary World Affairs Seminar. In conjunction with the Ministry of Education, a prequalifying essay contest is arranged for lower sixth form students. On the basis of entries received, six finalists are chosen and from these two are selected to attend the seminar. This event provides a unique education opportunity for the students selected at the international level and there are really no losers as the essay contest in itself is a valuable learning exercise.
This Vocational Service project is aimed at enhancing the professional development of club members, other Rotarians and their business associates with a focus on those skills necessary to adapt and manage the current environment of continuous change. We encourage other Rotary clubs and Rotarians interested in skills development to contact us. We are confident that there will be many opportunities for joint participation.
