Eighteen women gathered at the Chateau Creole Restaurant on the night of January 1, 1993 in answer to a call to service. District Governor Representative (North), Rupert Cheekes, Special Representative Tony Jardine and Lennox Lewis, President Elect of the Rotary Club of Central Port of Spain, addressed this group which would become the nucleus of the Rotary Club of Maraval.
Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Central Port of Spain, the Rotary Club of Maraval was proposed in recognition of the wealth of service which professional women could bring to the organization and its largely male population. The gesture was well received as the Club's application for Charter, submitted to the district governor in April 1993, listed 38 women.
The granting of the Club's Charter on May 4, 1993 saw the achievement of a number of 'firsts'. Besides its unique composition within District 7030, the formal establishment of the Club less than five months after its first meeting would also create history in local circles, as would the size and professional depth of its membership.
The Rotary Club of Maraval shares the territory of sponsoring Club, the Rotary Club of Central Port of Spain and all other Clubs in the Port of Spain area. Its first board consisted of Dolores Jardine, President, Nancy Jackman, President Elect, Carol Commissiong, Secretary, Elizabeth Doyle, Treasurer, Helen Ache (Director of Club Service), Esther Le Gendre (Vocational Service), Brenda Clarke (Community Service), Sandra Paul (International Service), Natalie Abraham (Youth Service) and Mary Charles (Sargeant-at-arms).
P.S. we now have a 20% male membership - brave fellows !!
